Evelyn cracked open the door to her room, peeking through the small space to make sure the common area was empty. It was past midnight, and the moon had reached its pinnacle in the sky above their ship. Evelyn could no longer see it outside of her cabin window, but the waves were illuminated by its faint glow from overhead. Outside in the common room, all was dark and quiet. It appeared that the last of the team had gone to sleep.

After her encounter with Willow, Evelyn had frantically flipped through the silver book until she found the page with her own face staring up at her. She’d read it through, only to discover that Willow had been right. If the book could be trusted, which Evelyn was now having serious doubts about, then her biological father had been a man named Barrett Renard. Such a thing was impossible, she had told herself repeatedly. Impossible. Surely, if that had been the case, King William would not have allowed her to stay in the palace, and he certainly would not have made sure that she inherited the throne after Henry.

She had almost convinced herself of this when she remembered a brief conversation she’d overheard as a child.

“How did you find out?” Queen Alexandra asked.

“It doesn’t matter,” King William said. “What matters is that you lied to me.”

“We could just get rid of her,” Queen Alexandra pleaded to her husband’s rigid back. “No one else would ever have to know. We have Henry.”

“I will not punish her for your mistakes,” King William said. His voice was like ice, sending shivers down Evelyn’s spine. “I will always consider Evelyn to be my daughter . . . but I will never again think of you as my wife.”

Evelyn had slammed the book shut and sat there in the increasingly dark room until the sounds of the others outside of her door had quieted. Pushing the door to her room open farther, Evelyn crept out of the common room and into the dim hallway leading to the deck. She didn’t want to think about it anymore. She didn’t want to think about anything anymore.
